Ten Minute Talks: Helen of Balby

A single undated title deed with only eleven lines of text can be surprisingly informative. We don’t just discover that Helen of Balby, more than 800 years ago, could afford to rent property for her own use; the deed sheds light on other features of life in medieval Doncaster – though not without raising some questions. 

These shorter lunchtime talks by our curators are designed to give a bit more information about some of the amazing stories our collections hold.
