Doncaster’s position where the main north-south road crossed the Don at its lowest bridging point wasn’t always an advantage. During the Civil War the town put up with disruption, disease, and expense as soldiers of both sides came to Doncaster, often requiring billeting. This hastily written account was accepted by the corporation as an IOU for the expense of accommodating Scottish dragoons.
