20 Historical Women who Changed the World: Paintings by Chinwe Russell
20 Historical Women who Changed the World is an exhibition featuring a series of large-scale paintings by Nigerian-born artist Chinwe Russell. The collection of paintings gives an insight into the lives of some incredible women from around the world, whose work in different sectors has had a massive impact on the contemporary world.
Largely representational, the collection is a bold, colourful and educational body of work, which contains images of many well-known historical figures, including Marie Curie, Elizabeth I and Florence Nightingale.
Importantly these famous figures are seen alongside depictions of lesser-known women, including Wangari Maathai, Stephanie Kwolek, Dr Marie Maynard Daly and Gerty Cori, whose legacy continues to shape our lives.
Seen as a whole the exhibition is a powerful and inspiring reflection on the role that women have played in shaping the contemporary world, while also acknowledging the many obstacles that this group of women have had to overcome to achieve their goals.
