The LNER only existed for twenty-five years between the ‘grouping’ of railway companies in 1923 and nationalisation in 1948. In that short time, it established a worldwide reputation for technical innovation and the quality of its express passenger trains such as The Silver Jubilee and The Coronation, putting Doncaster, where its trains were built, at the forefront of public attention. We explore the formation of this sprawling enterprise from dozens of pre-grouping companies.
